Foot of Mt.Ikeda

霞間ヶ渓⇒安国寺⇒茶畑⇒禅蔵寺⇒大津谷⇒弓削禅寺⇒二條関白蘇生泉⇒瑞巌寺

濃尾平野最北端の西にそびえる池田山(標高924ｍ)の東山麓は、古くから開けていて、古墳群や寺院など歴史的な文化財が多く見られます。

濃尾平野を一望できる景勝地を、桜の名所、霞間ヶ渓から探索しました。

Mt. Ikeda(924m) lies at the western part of the northernmost of Nobi plain. The eastern foot of it became civilized from long ago and is dotted with historic cultural assets like ancient burial mounds and temples.

I started off on a cycling through this area of scenic beauty from Kamagatani.

霞間ヶ渓

Kamagatani

春には自生するヤマザクラをはじめソメイヨシノ、シダレザクラなど７種類程、約1500本の桜が咲き誇る名所です。

桜が一斉に咲いたこの渓谷を遠くから眺めると霞がかかったように見える事から「霞間ヶ渓」と呼ばれるようになったと言われています。

In spring 1500 cherry trees of seven kinds, both wild and planted, boast blooming, which, seen from a distance, looks as if the valley is covered with mist. Hence the name: Kamagatani ( a valley in haze ).

安国寺

Ankokuji temple

足利尊氏公が争乱の戦死者の菩提を弔うために全国に68ヶ寺建立した安国寺のうちの一つです。

This is one of 68 Ankokujis built nationwide by Ashikaga Takauji in order to pray for the repose of dead warriors.

茶畑

Tea Plantation

この辺りは、昼夜の寒暖差が大きく、冬でも日当たりが良いこと、きれいな伏流水が流れる傾斜地であること、などお茶栽培に適しており、まろやかでかおり高い「美濃いび茶」の生産地です。

With big difference in temperature between day and night, plenty of sunshine even in winter and slopes with clear, clean infiltration water, this area is suitable for growing tea. The mild and flavorful tea produced here is called Mino Ibi-cha.

禅蔵寺

Zenzōji temple　

土岐氏3代目美濃守護頼康が弟頼忠を揖斐郡池田に配したのが土岐頼忠一族の始まりです。頼忠は、池田の本郷に本郷城を築き、禅蔵寺を建立してこの地を拠点としました。

のちに5代目美濃国守護となり、以後その子頼益、孫の持益の時まで土岐氏の主流となりました。

This temple has the tombs of Toki Yoritada, 5th shugo (constable) of Mino province (now southern half of Gifu prefecture) and his family.

大津谷

Ōtsudani

霞間ヶ渓からふれあい街道を3km北に進んだ所にある渓谷で、春は梅・桜、秋は紅葉と四季折々の自然を楽しむ事が出来ます。

Located 3 kilometers to the north of Kamagatani, Ōtsudani gives you enjoyment of seasonal beauty of nature: plum and cherry blossoms in spring and red leaves in fall.

弓削禅寺(別名：アジサイ寺)

Yugezenji temple (also known as Hydrangea temple)

817年、天台宗の開祖伝教大師最澄が美濃安八に来た時、池田山の上に連日紫雲がたなびくのを見てこの地を訪れると谷間に湧く湯煙でした。ここに錫杖を入れて探ると忽然と馬頭観音像が出現したため、ここに草庵を結んで観音像を安置したのが弓削禅寺の始まりと伝えられています。

When Saichō (alias Dengyō Daishi ) came to Mino Anpachi in 817, he saw auspicious purple clouds hanging over Mt.Ikeda day after day. Wondering, he came to the mountain and found white steam rising in the valley. He stirred where the steam was rising with his crosier. Then suddenly a Batō Kannon (Kannon with the head of a horse ) popped out. So he installed it in a hut, which was the beginning of Yugezenji temple.

右側の山は金華山(稲葉山)です。 弓削禅寺からは、濃尾平野の素晴らしい眺望が楽しめます。

The mountain on the right is Mt.Kinka with Gifu Castle on the top. What a sweeping view you can get from here!

二條関白蘇生泉

Nijō Kanpaku (chief adviser to the Emperor) resuscitation water

南北朝時代の1353年、北朝の後光厳天皇が京の戦乱から逃れて、土岐頼康を頼って美濃小島へ行幸されました。病で遅れて小島へ来た関白二條良基が、ここで岩間からくみ取った清水をお飲みになり、元気になられたと伝わります。

In 1353 during Northern and Southern Courts Period, Emperor Go-Kōgon of the Northern Court escaped from warring Kyōto and fled to Mino Kojima, seeking refuge and support from Toki Yoriyasu, the military governor of Mino province. Kanpaku Nijō Yoshimoto came late because he was sick. But when he stopped at this spring and drank fresh water coming out from between rocks, he recovered his health.

瑞厳寺

Zuiganji temple

天平年間に行基が諸国巡業のおり、この地に地蔵菩薩を安置されたのが仏縁の始まりと伝わります。

In the years of Tenpyō, while Gyōgi (Gyōki) was touring from province to province, he installed a Jizō at this place. This was the beginning of Buddhism here.

3代美濃国守護土岐頼康が父頼清の菩提を弔うためにここに瑞巌寺を建立しました。お寺の西方の山の中腹には土岐頼清、頼康父子の墓所があります。

Toki Yoriyasu, the 3rd shugo (military governor) of Mino province, set up Zuiganji here to bring salvation to his father. Their tombs are set on the hillside a few hundred meters to the west of this temple.

Nakayama Kan’nonji temple

関ヶ原の戦いで敗れた西軍の小西行長が逃げ来てこの寺に隠れましたが、地元民に発見されました。

伊吹山中に逃れた行長は、そこで関ヶ原の年寄(庄屋・組頭)林蔵主(りんぞうす)と出会う。林蔵主は、早く落ち延びるよう行長を促したが、行長はこれを拒んだ。そしてこう言った。「自分を家康のもとへ連れていき、褒美をもらうがよい。自害はたやすいことであるが、私はキリシタンであるがゆえに自害ができないのだ。」やむを得ず、林蔵主は行長を領主竹中重門のところへ連れて行った。(実業之日本社発行　知れば知るほど面白い！「その後」の関ヶ原 より)

Konishi Yukinaga met defeat at Sekigahara (Battle of Sekigahara) but as a Christian, he refused to commit suicide and ran away into the mountains. After four days he was found at this temple and then arrested by Takenaka Shigekado.

また江戸時代、大垣藩主戸田氏鉄公の娘、おさい様が重い眼病で苦しんでいたある夜、この観音様を信仰しなさいと夢のお告げがあり、この寺へ何度か足を運んですっかり快復したそうです。

In Edo period Toda Ujikane’s daughter called Osai-sama was suffering from serious eye trouble. Then one night in her dream she heard a divine message telling her to believe in Nakayama Kannon. So she paid several visits to this Kannon accompanied by her brother Ujinobu, to find her trouble totally gone.

粕川

Kasukawa (Kasu River)

春日の谷あいを流れる粕川。昔、上流に住む長者が米の研ぎ粕を流したところから粕川と呼ばれるようになったそうです。

Through the gorge in Kasuga flows a river called Kasukawa. Long ago a chōja (a very old man) living up this river threw out into this river the waste left after washing rice. The waste is called “kasu”. This is why the river is called “Kasu-Kawa”.

天空の茶畑(上ヶ流茶園)

Tenkū-no Chabatake (Kamigare Tea Plantation)

古くからお茶の栽培がさかんな揖斐郡揖斐川町上ヶ流地区、標高300ｍ程の山の斜面一面に茶畑が広がっています。「春日茶」は、在来種、無農薬栽培で有名です。

Tea cultivation spreads on the whole hillside located about 300 meters above sea level. This prestigious Kasuga tea is noted for being native kind and using no chemicals.

2016年に地元の方により整備された天空の遊歩道を登ると、標高440ｍ程の絶景ポイントからモザイク状の茶畑が見え、「岐阜のマチュピチュ」「天空の茶畑」として、近年は多くの人が訪れる人気スポットとなっています。

A path gotten ready for walking by local residents in 2016 is called Tenkū-no Yūhodō. It leads you to a point 440ｍ above sea level which has a beautiful panoramic view.

This path has been becoming popular and popular and people came to call the tea cultivation Tenkū-no Chabatake. The whole area is also called Machu Picchu in Gifu.
