Ōgaki

During Edo Period, Ōgaki thrived as the biggest castle town in Mino Province, a post town on Minoji Highway and a river port town on Suimon River, which flows into Ibi River.

Fifteen first-class rivers run through the city and the city has abundant ground water plus many artesian wells. So, it is called “Capital of Water”

Shōrō-dō of Daiunji Temple

This shōrō-dō (bell tower) is highly rated as a masterpiece with its ‘honbuki’ (genuine roof-tiling), ‘sō-keyaki zukuri’ (full-zelkova structure), ‘oogi daruki’ (fan-rib shaped rafter), dragon- or lion-shaped wooden sculputures, a stone foundation made of blueish stones quarried in Ibi, and well-balanced shape, etc.

Mochisō, wagashi shop

(Cheers to Nice Families!)’

Funamachi River-Port

Suimon River had originally been an outer moat of Ōgaki Castle, but it was connected with Ibi River enabling boats and ships to go to Kuwana. Hence, Funamachi River Port enjoyed great facilities for water transport.

Ending Place of Bashō’s Haiku Journey ‘Okuno Hosomichi’

Haiku poet Matsuo Bashō completed his world-fomous haiku journey called ‘Narrow Road to Far Province’ in Ōgaki, heading for Kuwana in a boat from Funamachi Port. To commemorate this, 2.2km-long Suimon River Four-Season Promenade was made and kept in good condition.Cherry trees along the promenade attract lots of people.

Kasuga Shrine

Warehouses of Miwa Shuzō

The two sake warehouses built in 1887 and 1888 escaped war-damage and are in full use now. So they are very valuable industrial assets. Though utility takes preference over decoration, irregular windows or continuous line of eaves give them interesting variety.

Ōgaki Matsuri (Festival) is a rare instance in Japan, where the yama floats from both the townspeople and a past feudal lord are displayed together. The central location of the Mino region in Japan plays an important role in the festival because one can see connections to both eastern and western festival cultures; the karakuri marionette dolls of the yatai floats were influenced by the Chūkyō region’s yama float processions, while the child kabuki and Japanese dance performances were inspired by those of the Kinki region.
